Victoria Goldman - India - 1998
The Robin Rice Gallery announces a solo show of photography by Victoria Goldman. The opening reception will be held on Thursday November 5, 1998 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. The show runs through December 25, 1998.
Drawing on a ten year fascination with the beauty of India, Victoria Goldman’s images are a personal journal capturing a land of profound extremes. Intoxicating and devastating, Goldman takes what is common and makes it sensual and what is sensual becomes sacred. In this land of ritual, chaos, and poverty, the simplest task becomes almost magical.
In this exhibition the gallery becomes a temple of sorts. Saris, bells, classical Indian music, hanging beads and incense combine with a salon-style exhibition of black and white, color, small and large photographs that pay homage to India.
The invitational piece Enter the Temple is both figurative and metaphorical. A beautiful saried woman has placed her offerings of flowers on a temple altar and is walking from within the inner sanctum through stone columns toward a doorway full of light. As if she is being drawn out, the woman leaves the shelter of one temple for the light of another.
Kashi Vision is a painterly view of the Ganges River with pastel colors of the first morning light. Bathers performing their morning ablutions as silhouettes of temples in the ancient city of Benares hover in the distance.
Born in New York City, Ms. Goldman is a graduate from Sarah Lawrence College, and has studied alternative printing processes in the U.S. and the UK. She currently resides in New York and Santa Fe.
