JEFFERSON HAYMAN - THE HEART HAS ITS REASONS

"…A man reaches inside his body to show his heart to others. It reminds me of the life of an artist; we bare our hearts and ideas to the world."

Hayman isn't describing one of his own photographs, rather, he's referring to a drawing by one of his favorite artist's—Odilon Redon—that bares the same title, The Heart Has Its Reasons. However you define Hayman's work, the still life photographs are deafeningly quiet. You can just about hear yourself breathe as you address a hat, a shirt, a boat, or a torso. He brings the viewer to the rarest of experiences - a truly still moment. It's a hard experience to find today.

Summertime - 2013

The Robin Rice Gallery proudly announces SUMMERTIME Salon 2013, an annual photography exhibit featuring gallery artists as well as a few newcomers.

Marrying tasteful photographs with a common theme, Rice's aesthetic captures the perfect image of summer. When one thinks of the summertime, a million different smells, sights, sounds, and memories manifest. The gallery does just that with its annual show, displaying a diversity of styles, themes, nuances, and artist techniques.

Rice curates 54 artists' handiwork with sensitivity and honesty. "This is my favorite exhibit even though it takes months to curate and a week to install. It is my curatorial showcase. I love the moment when the viewer is first drawn to an image," says Rice. "Sometimes it's indefinable; a moment when the viewer not only shares but also reconnects to an experience remembered."

ROSANNE OLSON - RAPTURE

In this dream-based series, water becomes a metaphor for sky. The invitational image, Bourrée, depicts a woman suspended in soft hues of blue, floating upward as if ascending into the heavens. In Arabesque, the model seems to tumble gracefully through clouds, arms outstretched. Olson's color images are surreal and mysterious. In most of the images there are refractions of light and bits of clouds that blend together, leaving us feeling as if we are looking at watercolor paintings.

MARK AND KRISTEN SINK - NEW WORK

Taking in Mark and Kristen Sink's photographs in all their patinated glory, with faces blurred and eyes sharpened, crinkled petals and languid limbs, their subjects appear to be plucked from a Victorian-era fairytale. And in execution, to a degree, they were. In order to achieve their vintage quality, the husband and wife team employed one of the oldest techniques in photographic history—the collodion wet plate process, a laborious method whereby the irregularities of human error render each piece a one-of-a-kind thing of beauty. Inside the gallery, the collected beauty define the couple's dreamlike style.
