ROBIN RICE GALLERY
“I love the moment when the viewer is first drawn to an image. Sometimes it’s indefinable; a moment when the viewer not only shares but also reconnects to an experience remembered. When that moment comes, I’ll do whatever I can to make it possible for a client to have the art that moves them...”
-Robin Rice
The Robin Rice Gallery strives to offer a range of work across many price points.
Voted Best Of New York: "Best Affordable Art Gallery" 2004 by New York Magazine.
Robin Rice is a fine art photographer, and a gallerist based in Hudson, NY. Spanning five decades both in work (and life), Rice has exhibited in galleries throughout the United States and Italy, with her signature imaginary that is cinematic yet unstaged, refined and yet briming with life. Regarding her credo, Rice is fond of this quote from photographer, painter and curator Edward Steichen, who once said, “When that shutter clicks, anything else that can be done afterward is not worth consideration.” To wit, Rice’s photography is unedited and born simply from the magic of in-camera composition.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Rice is self-taught, having received her first camera at the age of 11. Moving to New York City in 1975, she lived by Pratt Institute in Brooklyn where she was swept up into the electrifying scene of the art world. Forming close relationships with fellow young artists in downtown Manhattan, she photographed their adventures together, primarily working with Kodak Tri-X 400 black and white film, and occasionally shooting color with Kodachrome 25 film slides, the latter of which have been compared to the dreamy aesthetic of fashion photography of Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin and Debra Turbeville, all of whom inspired and informed her artwork during this period.
After enjoying 15 years of assisting photographers and running her own studio to meet the needs of commercial clients, Rice combined her expertise to become a fine art photography gallerist, opening The Robin Rice Gallery in 1990 on West 11th Street, where she was based for over three decades and voted “Best Affordable Art Gallery” by New York Magazine in 2004.
Her newest space, Robin Rice Gallery, opened in Hudson, NY in early 2024 at 234 Warren St, following a three-year search for the perfect locale. Here, Rice offers her signature curated fine art and photography, and a smattering of the best in home décor, including lighting from Stone & Sawyer and Tucker Robbins, vintage and new furniture, and accessories. By arranging her gallery to mimic a well-designed home, Rice can guide buyers, collectors, and interior designers alike in reaching superb visual potential with timeless objects and art.
