Analecta: Excerpts from a Whole

Photographic Images by Cali Gorevic

Analecta refers to excerpts taken from a larger work. These are still life photographs of pieces taken from clay puzzles which I sculpted and then photographed. The exhibit is a correspondence between both mediums. From several sculpted puzzles, I have combined the individual puzzle pieces in different ways.

Once a devoted follower of Ansel Adams, making gelatin silver prints from medium format film, I was best known for my representational images of nature. In the last 5 years I have taken a turn towards surrealism, partially inspired by my admiration for sculpture by Hans Arp and Richard Serra. My images have become increasingly abstract, their realities not necessarily identifiable; thus the fluidity of  rocks, the shapes within sand, and the varied aspects of water.

This conceptual shift has led me to create my own abstracted sculptural subjects from an internal visual, but always referencing nature. To provide an ethereal mood, I exposed these images to print them “high key” . The result is the feeling of a pencil drawing.

There is no way to determine size or context. To increase the mystery, the images are numbered instead of titled, leaving the viewer free to enjoy their own interpretations. The imperfections and tool marks in the hand built clay pieces speak of human fallibility.
