Cig Harvey

The Robin Rice Gallery announces a solo exhibition of photography by Cig Harvey. The opening reception will be held on Wednesday January 12th 2005 from 5.30 to 8.30pm. The show will run through February 27th, 2005.

Using an endless palette of brilliant hues, Cig Harvey’s autobiographical works depict everyday things from unusual perspectives, evoking humor and intrigue. Through the interplay of gestures, settings, color and simple props, these bold yet fragile works represent a unique form of storytelling which both seduces and delights.

The invitational image, “The Impossible Tasks” series, is a witty attempt to explain her overwhelming feelings of displacement and the ubiquitous search for home. We see her awkwardly attempting to water an enormous expanse of grass with a single watering can. Selections from her earlier series,“Eyes Like Disappointed Lemons”, is also being shown at the gallery. This portfolio, made to mark her 30th birthday, uses color, form and metaphor in an attempt to discuss ideas of age, disillusion and expectations. Cig finds redemption in creating order out of chaos and beauty out of pain.

Born in 1973 in England, Cig Harvey, MFA, has been committed to the medium of photography for the past 16 years. In addition to The Robin Rice Gallery, she is also represented by Watermark Gallery, Houston, Bassetti Fine Photography, New Orleans, and The William Ryan Gallery, Belfast, Maine.  Her clients include Kate Spade Inc, Bloomingdales, Ralph Lauren and Ace Insurance. She was recently awarded Rising Star by Photo District News, in October 2004 and her work will be profiled in Shots magazine in the spring of 2005. Cig is one of PDN’s emerging 30 of 2005. She is a member of the faculty at The Art Institute of Boston and also teaches in the summer at the Maine Photographic Workshops. This will be Cig’s first solo show at The Robin Rice Gallery.
