Kim Reierson - Devotions
March 10 - April 25, 2004
The Robin Rice Gallery announces "DEVOTIONS" an exhibition of photographs that explores Kim Reierson's fascination with car culture. The opening reception will be held on Wednesday March 10, 2004 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. The show runs thru April 25th.
Reierson's photographs capture the beauty of cars with an eye for a subject she has carefully studied for many years, deconstructing them through motion, color and precisely cropped compositions. She has documented truckers as they ceaselessly crisscrossed the vast network of American highways, climbed inside monster rigs, cruised with lowrider car clubs, and at times has staked out her four-wheeled prey late into the night for that perfect shot. These intense color images range in sizes from 24” x 24” up to 60” mural prints.
In the invitational piece, Midnight in Georgia, an eerie night shot evocative of David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks”, connotes a strange event has taken place in quiet suburbia. California Dreaming, a photo of palm trees reflected on a red 50’s cruiser, mirrors California beach life in pop art- like photorealism. Nostalgic still life car portraits, as in Quicksilver are contrasted by electrifying demolition derby moments as in Violet, a crash scene captured in brilliant colors that blend into one another, blurred by motion of the camera, rendering a “pastel dance” reminiscent of Degas’ ballerinas. Cream Jete, a shot of a 1966 Chevy Impala ejecting through the air, transports the viewer into a world of jarring grace.
Born in California, raised in Bolivia, Reierson moved to New York in the spring of 2000. She admits she always wanted to be a racecar driver, but photography became an even greater passion. After graduating from the University of Santa Barbara with a BA in Fine Arts, she worked as Chief photographer and photo editor at the Santa Barbara Independent Newspaper where she won state and national awards for photojournalism. Reierson's recent clients in editorial and advertising include: Art & Auction, Cosmopolitan, Pacific Bell, Vogue, and Wine Country Living.
Kim Reierson has shown in two groups shows at the Robin Rice Gallery, this is her first solo show.
