José Picayo - Photographs - 1995
The Robin Rice Gallery announces a solo exhibition of photographs by Jose Picayo. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 11, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The show runs through June 25, 1995.
Jose Picayo’s photographs communicate in intense whispers images that radiate quirky, yet formal elegance. Drawn to unusual beauties, Jose Picayo is a fashion photographer who has taken aesthetic gambles, and made a name for him self in the magazine world through eccentric and striking imagery. His portraits, appearing strong and severe at times, resonate with elements of humor and beauty.
One has a solid sense of the breadth of his rare vision, developed in the islands where he grew up, through his admiration of classical seminal photographers, and his collection of old family photos. Through his passion for old photographic processes complimented by novel techniques like large-scale 20x24 Polaroids, he brings a timeless and mythical quality to his work. His photographs can be described as vintage, yet no date can readily be placed upon them.
This show includes some of his fashion work, which has appeared in
The New York Times Magazine, Town and Country, Harpers’ Bazaar, Mirabella, L.A. Style, and Travel & Leisure and Taxi.
Born in Cuba, Picayo moved to Puerto Rico in 1966, and then on to Ohio. Once in New York he studied photography at Parson’s School of Design. This is his first solo show at The Robin Rice Gallery.
