SUMMERTIME SALON - 2012

JUNE 27 - SEPTEMBER 9, 2012

The Robin Rice Gallery announces SUMMERTIME Salon 2012, the annual group show of photographs by gallery artists. The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, June 27 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The show runs through September 9.

This yearly show is synonymous with summer. The collection immerses the viewer in the mood of the season with its breezy and joyful tone fused with a contemporary edge. The artful curation reflects Rice’s signature style—an aesthetically unified yet eclectic blend of photographic styles and sizes hung in the salon from floor to ceiling. The SUMMERTIME Salon highlights Rice’s talent for selecting diverse, intriguing images that come together like a beautifully complicated puzzle to evoke the perfect harmony of summer. It is the best of what is and what might be—full of peacefulness, yet ripe with possibilities to be seized.

Over the past 22 years, Rice has built an impressive roster of artists, both emerging and established. While most of the 100 pieces are chosen from the gallery’s repertoire of solo shows, the SUMMERTIME Salon also presents the opportunity for Rice to showcase a few newcomers. Rice works closely with the artists to share their unique creative voices and worldviews in a stylish, artistic setting.

The invitational image, "Annemarie" by Cig Harvey, captures the mood of the show. Looking down on the wavy, strawberry blonde hair spread like a bouquet on the green grass, the viewer can almost smell fresh cut grass and envision a floating cloud above. The photograph is both delicate and evocative.

From that portrait, viewers gain entrée into an array of poignant images that invite them to summon up memories of summers gone by or to simply slow down and enjoy a visual repose. One minute, viewers are at the beach and the next, they’re immersed in an urban jungle. An air of nostalgia carries throughout the show, balanced by a number of moody landscapes, surrealistic compositions and ironic portraits.

“I love the moment when the viewer is first drawn to an image,” says Rice. “Sometimes it’s indefinable; a moment when the viewer not only shares but also reconnects to an experience remembered.”

Rice’s installation design is carefully orchestrated so that the individual pieces work off each other. It follows no rules, yet comes together to create a unified and almost magical feeling in the space—much like summertime itself.
