Victoria Goldman - Conexxtion - 2000
The Robin Rice Gallery announces a solo show of photography by Victoria Goldman. The opening reception will be held on Wednesday February 16, 2000 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. The show runs through April 1, 2000.
In this new body of work Ms. Goldman has created images that breathe with the potential for transformation at the verge of the XI century... Once again images infused with a spirituality, that the most simple things she photographs have the deepest capacity for revealing the divine nature of life It is the combining of images and the relations between them that inspired her to the title of her new exhibit: Connexions.
What is most striking about these photographs is their simplicity and their color. Ms. Goldman captures with intensity the smallest things that most of the time surround us unnoticed. Those details that receive new meaning once we begin to wonder about the symbolic aspects of each photograph: the transforming essence of butterflies. The dialog between an arrangement of three eggs on a blue plate with the seeds of a open pomegranate: symbols of fertility and new lives.
The composition surpass the frame. Using an old SX-70 Polaroid camera and printed digitally as large scale iris prints, these colorful images are mostly set in diptychs and triptychs. In one diptych, a close-up of a woman’s delicate throat is paired with the beauty of morning light passing through amber curtains still waiting to be opened.
In the invitational piece, Liquid Reading two hands hold a crystal ball, perhaps suggesting the capacity to take the future into one’s hands.
Victoria’s gypsy nature has led her around the globe photographing extensively in Hawaii, Central America Europe and especially to Asia where she has been studying Hinduism as well as the classical arts for the last 10 years. She has also taught yoga and meditation internationally. Born in New York and now living in Santa Fe, she graduated from Sarah Lawrence College and studied with Master printers and artists in the US and The UK. Since 1991, Victoria Goldman has shown in several group shows, one two person show and this is her second solo show at The Robin Rice Gallery. She has also exhibited in Santa Fe, London, and Manchester.
