This exhibition, “35 Years in Photographs" is Picayo’s 10th solo show at Robin Rice Gallery. It includes a selection of photographs spanning 1991-2025.

Picayo, renowned for fashion and still-life photography, communicates quirky yet formal elegance. His portraits, appearing strong and severe at times, resonate with elements of humor and beauty. Refusing labels, he is very eclectic when his choice of subjects or in defining a particular style and is always consistent in his meticulous technique. His photographs can be described as vintage, yet no date can readily be placed upon them.

“The Architecture of Stillness”, explores the state of being present. Maya invites us to experience her memories of moments in the past through figures that occupy the canvas with striking color and sculptural shapes. Faceless, the figures are universal vessels that give space for the viewer’s own emotions and memories.

For Maya, the “plan is never a plan. I begin a painting by sketching directly into the paint, so I don’t lose any spontaneity. I sculpt figures using blocks of color, adding and subtracting until there is an edited space. That space invites intimacy and stillness, which creates room for the viewer’s experience”.
